Now we wait...

We were all up bright and early at 4am this morning. K's CI surgery was scheduled for 7am but we needed to be at the surgery center by 5am for check in. It took me forever to fall asleep last night, but I finally fell asleep on my soggy tear stained pillow. Sweet little K was sleeping so peacefully when I had to wake him at 4:30, poor baby!

He did so well while the nurses took his vital signs and we put on his tiny little hospital gown. While we were waiting for them to take K to surgery we had a little surprise, our local TV station came by and asked if they could interview us about little K's cochlear implant surgery(as if we were not nervous enough already!!) K was his sweet little self playing with his toys while Mommy and Daddy got interviewed. He got a little cranky towards the end, he had not had anything to eat since 8pm the night before and he was ready for some breakfast!!

Momma what's this?

Shortly after that the surgery team came and I carried little K to the doors of the operating room and let them take my sweet little boy. I cried like a baby. A big hug from my husband and family helped. In my heart I know he will be fine, so for now all we can do is wait...

Memories of Abby's CI date just came flooding back after reading your post. What a day! But it was the BEST decision we ever made and, although the day of I was totally ready to back out.

Surgery day advice: When Abby was in her surgery I wrote a letter to her about the decision we made and my feelings about the day. Someday if she's every going through a hard time or when (if) she asks me why we made this decision, I will let her read it. And hopefully she will understand why we did it and how much we love her.

Hope all goes well!

Oh my goodness, seeing Dr. Peters makes me think that you are close to us. We live in Fort Worth!

I remember surgery day, all the stress & the smell of anesthesia on Thomas for the following 36 hours. The day following surgery was a little tough for us, but the next day Thomas was playing outside with his older sister...almost back to normal!

As Mandie said, this is the best decision...just wait until activation day! What a blessing you have in your little one!

Please keep us posted! Blessings!

I just read your news story on WFAA.com. How exciting Baby K being the youngest at the centre to receive implants! Ava was also 9 months old. It's astounding just how quickly she caught up. I'm so happy for you and can't wait to hear all about his progress! Good luck.

I was thinking about you all yesterday and praying that everything went well.
Everytime I read about a child getting a CI, I think back to when I handed Allison over to the nurses for her 1st one, it seems like a lifetime ago, but it has been only 5 short years. WOW, what she has been able to do in those years. She is reading above grade level and talking up a storm, so much so that we have to ask her to be quite sometimes.
These are just a few of the things you have to look forward to with Kemper.
It won't be long now and you will be hearing his sweet little voice saying Mommy, Daddy and I love you.
Can't wait to hear how he is doing. Oh, loved the news story.
